Experience the magic of the sun-drenched Greek islands and the beauty of northern Italy’s historic culture.  We begin our journey relaxing in the Italian resort towns on Lago Maggiore and Lake Como. During an exciting 7-night Eastern Mediterranean cruise, enjoy an evening stroll on stunning Mykonos, soak in Santorini’s breathtaking views, and stop at Corfu, the lushest of the Ionian Islands. Enjoy an afternoon in Katakolon, famous for the ruins of the Temple of Zeus and the site of the very first Olympic Games. Revel in Venice’s historic St. Mark’s Square, Grand Canal and Bridge of Sighs.

Our Itinerary:

Day 1: Wednesday, August 31, 2016
Overnight Flight. Join us as we explore the magnificent historical sights and cultures of northern Italy and the stunning Greek Islands. Experience the breathtaking scenery of the Italian lakes region followed by a splendid 7-night Eastern Mediterranean cruise aboard the Norwegian Jade.
Day 2: Thursday, September 1, 2016
Lago Maggiore, Italy – Tour Begins

Our tour opens on the picturesque Lago Maggiore. This evening, join your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner.(D)

Day 3: Friday, September 2, 2016
Lago Maggiore – Como – Stresa – Lago Maggiore

Ease your way into the local culture as your Tour Manager shares a few key phrases of the native language. Then, enjoy time in the beautiful resort town of Como, charming with its beautiful villas, colorful gardens and spectacular views. Return to Lake Maggiore to soak up the lakeside atmosphere of this delightful town. Visit one of Stresa’s specialty wine shops to enjoy a wine tasting while learning about Italy’s renowned products such as olive oil, balsamic vinegar and fine wines. Day 4: Saturday, September 3, 2016
Lago Maggiore – Venice – Board Cruise Ship

Depart for Venice this morning. Your exciting 7-night Eastern Mediterranean cruise begins today on the Norwegian Jade. This lovely ship offers award-winning restaurants, a relaxing spa, grand casino and an energetic nightlife. While on board, breakfast, lunch and dinner are included daily. Early this evening you will set sail for Corfu, Greece. (B,D)

At Sea

Enjoy a full day at sea. Savor the magic of the Mediterranean as you sit back, relax by the pool and explore all of the amenities available on board your cruise ship. (B,L,D)

Day 6: Monday, September 5, 2016
Corfu, Greece

Today, visit the sea swept island of Corfu. Surrounded by turquoise waters and mountainous terrain, Corfu is considered the most lush of the Ionian Islands. Visit one of its many golden sand beaches or explore the elegant town, rich in history and the arts. Sail this evening to breathtaking Santorini. (B,L,D)

Day 7: Tuesday, September 6, 2016
Santorini

Welcome to the stunning island of Santorini. In 1500 B.C., a powerful volcano erupted and caused the central part of the island to sink into the sea. Could this be the lost city of Atlantis? Enjoy an entire day at leisure to soak in the breathtaking views and delve into the mysteries of ancient Santorini. Depart this evening and sail overnight to Mykonos. (B,L,D)

Day 8: Wednesday, September 7, 2016
Mykonos

Dock this morning on the famed island of Mykonos. Enjoy a relaxing day to independently explore the charms of the most popular island in the Cyclades. Don’t miss Mykonos Town, where mazes of narrow streets link the whitewashed buildings and traditional life continues amidst the bustling activity. (B,L,D)

Olympia (Katakolon)

This morning, dock in Olympia. You may wish to visit the legendary sanctuary of Zeus and the Olympic Stadium, where the first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. (B,L,D)

At Sea

Relax during another day at sea. Cast your eyes toward the horizon and reflect on your amazing journey. Take some time to once again enjoy all of the amenities available aboard your ship. (B,L,D)

Venice, Italy – Disembark Cruise Ship – Murano Island, Venice

Disembark your cruise ship this morning in enchanting Venice. Visit St. Mark’s Square, a bustling hub of quintessentially Italian activity and events. A local expert provides a walking tour featuring the Clock Tower, St. Mark’s Basilica, the Grand Canal and the famous Bridge of Sighs. Time is available to experience Venice on your own. Of course, you may choose an optional gondola ride…there is simply no better way to revel in the magic of Venice than to be serenaded as you glide through its famous canals. Later, we travel to Murano Island, your home for two nights. (B)

Day 12: Sunday, September 11, 2016
Murano Island

Murano Island is famous around the world for its beautiful blown glass. This morning you will enjoy an up-close glass making demonstration. Discover the secrets of this ancient art and marvel at the intricate designs of each one-of-a-kind piece. Afterwards, you may wish to explore the island of Murano independently. One of the most impressive sights here is the Church of San Pietro, where travelers can look upon the restored frescoes created by del Veronese, Tintoretto. This evening enjoy a farewell dinner celebrating the end of a fun-filled and memorable trip. (B,D)

Itinerary:

Day 1 – Panama City, Panama
Welcome to fun, vibrant Panama, home to the Panama Canal, the most important waterway in the world. Take two daytime cruises on the Panama Canal: one through the canal locks and another cruise on Gatun Lake. The Isthmus of Panama links North and South America. See both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. With Caravan you explore rainforests and sandy beaches. Meet friendly native Indians living in the jungle. Caravan provides transfers from Panama’s Tocumen Airport to your hotel for a two night stay. Rooms are available for check in after 4:00 p.m. Join Caravan for an 8:00 p.m. welcome briefing. Dinner is served until 9:30 p.m. at your hotel. D

Day 2 – Old Panama, Miraflores Locks
This morning, visit the ruins of Panama Viejo (Old Panama), the city founded by the Spanish in 1519, as a gateway for gold from the Inca Empire. Next, on your scenic drive of Panama City’s bayfront, enjoy views of Casco Antiquo (The Old French Quarter) and today’s modern skyline. Panama City is a blend of Manhattan, Miami, and Las Vegas seasoned with Latin American flavor and style. Lunch. Visit the Canal Museum at Miraflores, overlooking the Panama Canal locks. Learn about the Canal construction and operation. From Pre-Columbian times to the present day, Panama had a prominent role as the major transit route between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Next, drive through the City of Knowledge, the former United States Army Base, Fort Clayton and return to your hotel. Enjoy dinner. BLD

Day 3 – Panama Canal Cruise – Gatun Lake
This morning cross the Isthmus to Colon, the Caribbean port at the north end of the Panama Canal. Your short drive through Colon passes by the Free Trade Zone, the largest in the Americas and the Panama Canal Railway Station. Visit the Panama Canal Expansion Observation Center. See the construction of the new locks at the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal. Learn how the locks raise ships 87 feet above the Caribbean Sea on to the Panama Canal. Lunch. Afternoon boat ride on Gatun Lake, the artificial lake which forms part of the Panama Canal. See the lush jungle watershed region of the Panama Canal. Cruise through jungle canals and by hilltop islands, home to a variety of wildlife. Look for monkeys. Enjoy a relaxing two night stay at your resort located in the rainforest. Dinner. BLD

Day 4 – Panama Canal Cruise – Locks Transit
Today an unforgettable adventure as you cruise another portion of the Panama Canal. Cruise by the Bridge of the Americas, pass through Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks, and cross the Continental Divide. Then wind through the Gaillard Cut to the town of Gamboa. Your small passenger vessel allows for close-up views of the opening and closing of the huge six foot thick steel gates of both the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks. See, at eye-level, how transiting vessels are guided by tugboats and pulled by small trains. (Please note that the route may be reversed.) Next, drive by the Smithsonian’s Tropical Research Institute. Return to your jungle resort. Stroll the gardens, swim in the pool, or enjoy the scenic views from your private balcony. Dinner. BLD

Day 5 – Embera Indians, Butterflies, Orchids
This morning, cruise on the Chagres River to visit an Embera Indian village. The Embera inhabit the rainforests of Panama. See exotic Embera handicrafts, such as tightly woven palm fiber baskets and carvings made form tagua nuts and the cocobolo tree. Lunch. Look for colorful butterflies on your visit to a butterfly garden. See rare tropical orchids at an orchid nursery. Visit an open air frog garden. Next, cross over the Panama Canal on the Centenario Bridge. Continue to your beach hotel for a relaxing two night stay on the Pacific Coast. Dinner. BLD

Day 6 – Playa Bonita
Entire day at leisure to enjoy your beach resort. Swim in your hotel’s infinity pool. Lunch. Enjoy a carefree afternoon. Time to beach comb and enjoy your resort’s amenities. Dinner. BLD

Day 7 – Handicrafts, Museum of Biodiversity
Morning return to Panama City via the Bridge of the Americas. Enjoy spectacular views from Amador Causeway connecting Perico, Naos, Culebra and Flamenco Islands. Visit a Kuna Indian marketplace. Shop for colorful Kuna mola embroidery depicting rainforest animals and marine life, and exotic wood handicrafts. Lunch. Visit the world-renowned Museum of Biodiversity, designed by architect Frank Gehry. Enjoy a farewell dinner. BLD

Day 8 – Panama City
Your tour ends after breakfast this morning at your hotel. Breakfast begins at 6:00 a.m. Caravan provides transfers to Panama’s Tocumen airport, arriving at 5:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Thanks for vacationing with Caravan.¡Hasta la vista! B

Two Daytime Cruises on the Panama Canal

With Caravan, you enjoy two daytime cruises on the Panama Canal. Your Panama Canal Gatun Lake Cruise is one hour by small watercraft. Your Panama Canal Locks Transit Cruise is usually three hours, depending on canal schedules. This is a public vessel so you may be joined by other tourists. The smaller size of the ship allows for unique close-up views of the opening and closing of the six foot thick steel gates of both the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks.
